Schubert - Klavierstucke D. 946, Nr. 1

Schubert - Klavierstucke D. 946, Nr. 1 in E-flat minor

Part of a set of three pieces written in 1828, they were probably intended as a continuation of the series of impromptus Schubert had begun in 1827 of Op. 90 and Op. 142.  However, they did not appear in print during Schubert's lifetime.

In this recording I have included the Andantino section, deleted from the autograph yet appearing in the first edition.

Earth speaks

In spirit with Earth Hour activities, this piece was recorded in darkness using equipment with a minimal electrical footprint.  It is a meditation on the planet on which we live the substance of its diverse landscape.

Playing the piano in complete darkness is an activity which I have found to be very fruitful in the creation of ideas and enhanced focus it can bring to sound with the diminished presence of visual stimuli.  I have applied this activity to composed music as well.

Live Recording.  March 22, 2007.

Louie - Memories in an Ancient Garden

Alexina Louie - Memories in an Ancient Garden

Live recording.  March 22, 2007.

This is an intensely internalized piece, and instructs the pianist to play in a rubato style "as if intoxicated by the scent of a thousand blossoms."  The mystery of the movement is further enhanced by colouristic playing inside the piano and the use of an ostinato passage in the second section.
